NYCYF events provide opportunities for Youth Funders to network, share lessons learned, explore new challenges facing New York City youth, and examine the City’s philanthropic and public response to these issues. The network also creates venues in which local funders can learn from youth programming, research, and policy experts, both locally and nationally. In addition to in-person meetings, NYCYF uses diverse vehicles including webinars, conference calls, LIST-SERVS, and policy briefs to communicate with its constituents.

Powerful Resource or Unhealthy Distraction?

The Ongoing Debate about Young People and Technology

Technology is omnipresent in the lives of American youth. Studies show that by the time they turn two, more than a third of kids have used a mobile device; and nearly a quarter of teens are online “almost constantly.” In the right context, digital media and the web can serve as powerful tools for learning—but their use by youth has also been linked to attention problems, obesity, and other issues. This session will explore:

  • What we know and have yet to learn about the growing use of digital media tools and technologies by youth,
  • The benefits and challenges of youth exposure to digital media,
  • Best practices for integrating digital media into a young person’s education and home life, and their implications for education, youth development, and workforce funders.

Featured speakers will include:

  • Lori Rose Benson, Vice President, Healthy Lifestyles, YMCA of Greater New York
  • An-Me Chung, Director of Strategic Partnerships at the Mozilla Foundation
  • Kerry McCarthy, (moderator)

Senior Program Officer, Arts & Historic Preservation, The New York Community Trust

  • Michael Levine, Executive Director, Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop

This event is sponsored by the Hive Digital Media Learning Fund in The New York Community Trust, a collaborative of funders that support digital media learning for adolescents, and make grants to the museums, libraries, and youth-serving nonprofits that comprise the Hive NYC Learning Network.
